Preventing disease in sows

Infection pressure, shedding patterns, vertical and horizontal transmission are all critical parts of the infection chain of pathogens that can cause disease to occur throughout the swine herd.

Preventing transmission of disease from sow to piglet is essential to the overall health of your herd. Eliminating infections from the breeding herd results in a stronger immune system and decreased shedding of the virus or bacteria.

How to recognise

Disease in sows frequently occurs from a combination of factors.  Immunosuppressive diseases (viral and/or bacterial) can create a favourable environment for less pathogenic diseases to become more serious. Fertility issues in sows (reproductive and productive) may be the result of various infectious diseases.

The impact on the farmer

Disease in sows, exhibiting recognizable clinical symptoms, leads to multiple issues, including increased mortality and culling rates, the need for more treatments, and a low level of performance. Additionally, subclinical disease. even without clear clinical symptoms, negatively affects reproductive performance. All will depress production and overall profits.
